Multicore control cables carry many control and signal circuits in one cable: push buttons, starters, interlocks, PLC inputs and outputs. They are usually 1.5 or 2.5 sq mm copper, with screened types for signals.
What the cores are
Many small conductors in one cable, numbered or colour-coded, typically from 2 to dozens of cores. Screened versions protect signals from interference.
Polycab multicore control cable types
| Type | Conductor | Armour | Voltage | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Control cable, armoured (2XWY) | Copper 1.5 sq mm | GI round wire | 1.1 kV | Field control wiring, buried and outdoor |
Control cable, unarmoured (2XY) | Copper 2.5 sq mm | No | 1.1 kV | Control wiring in trays |
Flexible control (Classic 100) | Flexible copper | No | 300/500 V | Machines, moving parts |
Screened control (Classic 110 CY) | Flexible copper | Tinned copper braid | 300/500 V | Drives and noisy environments |
Instrumentation cable | Copper pairs / triads | Optional | 500 V | 4–20 mA and sensor signals |
BMS cable | Copper | Braided or screened | 300/500 V | Building management systems |

5 core industrial flexible cable
Polycab 02YY-K is also made in 5 core from 0.5 to 4 sq mm:
Standard sizes
Control cables are usually 1.5 or 2.5 sq mm copper, in standard core counts from 2 cores upwards.
Armoured or unarmoured?
Armoured cable is for buried, outdoor and industrial routes; unarmoured for trays and conduits. Armoured vs unarmoured cable explains the choice.
