Single core is used for house wiring (one wire each for phase, neutral and earth), panel wiring, large power feeders laid as separate cores, solar DC strings and welding.
What the cores are
One conductor in one cable. In wiring, separate single cores are run for phase, neutral and earth, usually inside conduit.
Polycab single core cable types

Flexible cable, 1 core (01Y-K) | Flexible copper | No | 1100 V | Panel wiring, flexible connections |
LV power cable, 1 core (A2XY) | Aluminium | No | 1.1 kV | Large feeders, transformer and DG connections |
Solar DC cable (H1Z2Z2-K) | Tinned copper | No | 1500 V DC | Solar panel strings |
Welding cable | Copper or aluminium | No | — | Welding machine leads |

Standard sizes
Power cables are made in 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16, 25, 35, 50, 70, 95, 120, 150, 185, 240, 300, 400 sq mm and above. Choose the size for the load current, the length and how the cable is laid.
Armoured or unarmoured?
Armoured cable is for buried, outdoor and industrial routes; unarmoured for trays and conduits. Armoured vs unarmoured cable explains the choice.
