Capacitor kVAr = load kW × multiplier from the table below. For a 100 kW load at 0.80 power factor, raising it to 0.95 needs 100 × 0.42 = about 42 kVAr.
Multiplier table
Find your present power factor on the left and the target at the top; multiply your load in kW by the figure.
| Present PF | Target 0.95 | Target 0.98 | Target 0.99 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.70 | 0.69 | 0.82 | 0.88 |
| 0.75 | 0.55 | 0.68 | 0.74 |
| 0.80 | 0.42 | 0.55 | 0.61 |
| 0.85 | 0.29 | 0.42 | 0.48 |
| 0.90 | 0.16 | 0.28 | 0.34 |
The figures are tan φ₁ − tan φ₂ for the two power factors. Your electricity bill or a power analyser shows the present power factor and the maximum demand in kW.
Fixed capacitors or an APFC panel?
A fixed capacitor suits a steady load, such as a single large motor, connected after its starter. Where the load changes through the day, an automatic power factor correction (APFC) panel switches capacitor steps in and out with capacitor duty contactors, keeping the power factor close to the target without over-correcting.
Choosing the capacitor
| Your network | Capacitor duty |
|---|---|
| Mostly motors and lighting, few drives | Standard duty |
| General industry, frequent switching | Heavy duty or gas-filled heavy duty plus |
| Drives, UPS, inverters (harmonics), heavy switching | LTXL ultra heavy duty, often with detuned reactors |
On a normal 415 V supply, 440 V capacitors are the usual choice. Where detuned reactors are used or the voltage runs high, 480 V or 525 V capacitors are chosen. Switch each step with a capacitor duty contactor, such as the L&T MO C, which limits the inrush current.
