When one phase fails, a running three-phase motor keeps turning on the other two, draws much more current and overheats. A single phasing preventer (phase failure relay) sees the missing phase and switches off the starter at once. It costs a fraction of a motor rewind.
What single phasing is
A three-phase motor needs all three phases. A blown fuse, a loose or burnt contact, a broken cable or a fault on the supply line can cut one phase. A motor that is already running often keeps turning on two phases, so nobody notices, but the current in the remaining windings rises sharply and they overheat. A motor that is stopped will not start at all and just hums.
Why the overload relay is not enough
An overload relay protects against high current, but on a lightly loaded pump the current may not rise enough to trip it quickly, and the motor's windings still overheat unevenly. A phase failure relay reacts to the missing phase itself, within seconds.
What a phase monitoring relay checks
| Problem | Effect on the motor | Relay action |
|---|---|---|
| Phase failure (single phasing) | Overheats and burns | Trips the starter |
| Phase reversal (wrong sequence) | Runs backwards: pumps give no water | Prevents starting |
| Phase unbalance | Extra heating, shorter life | Trips above the set limit |
| Under or over voltage | High current, overheating | Trips outside the set band |
Where it fits
The relay is wired into the starter's control circuit, in series with the contactor coil, so it switches the motor off whenever the supply is unhealthy. Many pump starters have it built in, such as the L&T MU-Automatic DOL starter and MU-G controllers. For other starters, add a separate voltage monitoring relay such as the GIC SM500 series.
