Find the motor's full-load current on its nameplate, pick an MPCB whose adjustable range includes that current, and set the dial to it. For example, a 7.5 HP motor drawing about 11 A suits a 9–14 A Schneider GV2ME16, a 9–12.5 A Siemens 3RV2011-1KA10 or a 9–13 A L&T MOG.
Step by step
- Read the full-load current (FLC) from the motor nameplate at your supply voltage, usually 415 V.
- Choose the range: the FLC must fall inside the MPCB's setting range, ideally in its upper half.
- Set the dial to the motor's FLC. Do not set it higher to stop nuisance trips; find the cause instead.
- Check the breaking capacity against the fault level of your supply. Near a large transformer, tell us the transformer size and we will check it.
- Add a contactor for start-stop from push buttons, a float switch or a PLC. The MPCB and contactor together make a compact DOL starter, joined with the maker's link module.
Example ranges by motor size (415 V)
| Motor | Approx. FLC | Schneider TeSys GV2 | Siemens SIRIUS 3RV2 | L&T MOG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 HP (2.2 kW) | 4.8 A | GV2ME10 · 4–6.3 A | 3RV2011-1GA10 · 4.5–6.3 A | 4–6.3 A |
| 5 HP (3.7 kW) | 7.5 A | GV2ME14 · 6–10 A | 3RV2011-1HA10 · 5.5–8 A | 6.3–10 A |
| 7.5 HP (5.5 kW) | 11 A | GV2ME16 · 9–14 A | 3RV2011-1KA10 · 9–12.5 A | 9–13 A |
| 10 HP (7.5 kW) | 14.5 A | GV2ME20 · 13–18 A | 3RV2021-4AA10 · 10–16 A | 11–16 A |
| 15 HP (11 kW) | 21 A | GV2ME21 · 17–23 A | 3RV2021-4DA10 · 18–25 A | 19–25 A |
Full-load currents are typical; always go by the nameplate. Ranges are from the makers' current price lists and catalogues.
MPCB or MCB plus overload relay?
An MPCB replaces the separate MCB (or fuse) and thermal overload relay with one unit, saving panel space and wiring, and it trips on phase loss. It also has a clear ON / OFF / TRIP handle for isolation during maintenance.

Values are typical guidance for Indian 230 V single-phase and 415 V three-phase supplies. Always follow the equipment nameplate, the manufacturer's instructions and your licensed electrician, who is responsible for the final selection and installation.
